Round Table to End Homelessness

On 12th October 2020, celebrating the World Homelessness Day, DHAN HOPE (HOusing and habitat development of Poor for Empowerment Confederation) organized a virtual round table on ‘Housing and Social Protection to end Homelessness’. Engineers, Block Integrators, Community Representatives and DHAN HOPE team participated in the round table, wherein scenario prevalent Housing needs and demands were discussed.

Health and livelihood needs created a huge demand system since the beginning of pandemic outbreak. Whereas the housing needs of the poor were subdued during the period. Life and financial loss during the lockdown posed threats to owners, in turn transferring the same onto the tenants. Threats of eviction and lessee cancelation were common even during the pre-pandemic times – especially for people having livelihoods in the unorganized sector, and living in slums – and the COVID pandemic of this magnitude made the tenants insecure and uncertain of their lives, livelihoods and even their rental houses.

During the virtual roundtable, the participants shed light on the essential components needed to be ensured in a house, constraints in ensuring financial and technical services and the measures to go beyond hurdles in order to ensure housing for the poor.

Furthering the round table, DHAN HOPE team participated in the webinar on ‘Homelessness and Social Protection’ organized by United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs and UN Habitat. Comprehending the global framework for ensuring the housing for all, DHAN HOPE team conceived to internalize the global scenario in order to evolve localized framework on homelessness for DHAN member families.
