Clearing Prosopis Juliflora is one of the activities under the project ‘REVIVAL’ implemented in Madurai Urban by Centre for Urban Water Resources (CURE) of DHAN Foundation. In the month of October, Prosopis Juliflora was cleared in Anthaneri tank, Mangalkudi tank, Marunthankulam tank, Paraiyathikulam tank and Vandiyur tank. Clearance was done with the consultations and prior approvals from the respective line departments. Public Water Department staff engaged in the cause by demarcating the water spread areas for all the tanks.
Local community, across all the tanks, voiced, ‘thick growth of Prosopis Juliflora in the tank water spread areas resulted in the encroachment of the tanks over the years. With the Prosopis clearance and tank boundary demarcations, encroachments can be prevented and water spread area can be protected.’
