Sustaining development through solidarity
DHAN strongly believes in building and sustaining the People Institutions. Members, leaders and board of directors plays a significant role in the operational, governance, administration and sustainability of the functional groups at the group level, cluster level, federation level and regional level. People institutions at different levels – regional level, federation level, cluster level and group level – entrusts the benefits reaching the last-mile. The institutions serve as individual democratic entities for the members, at their respective nested level, provides the associated members with decision making power, for their self-growth through their own self-governance. These institutions have huge potential of extended mutuality in the face of adversities and disasters, creating a multiplier effect.

Excerpt from Development Matters [Feb 2008 Issue]…

“DHAN works for the community, mainly the poor community. When we say poor community, it is the bottom of the pyramid, which is the poorest of the poor. We started working in rural areas and then moved to urban poverty and also to the coastal and tribal areas. These are the four different contexts in which we operate. We are secular, and we have a special focus only on class- the economically poor”

-M. P. Vasimalai, Executive Director, DHAN Foundation

Regular dissemination of guidance and guidelines from the respective thematic programme offices and DHAN central office aids in mainstreaming the groups at their functional levels, subsequently ensuring the sustainablity of the federations and regions.

Experiential sharing from the sustainable groups to the new groups necessitates the much-needed nested mutuality leading to building the philosophy ‘Vasudhaika Kutumbakam’. Equipping the members, leaders and BoD members with new skillset is a continuous practice across all the federations.Monthly meetings across the nested institutions are organized to ensure the practice of SoMaHa not only for the members, but also for their families. When the ‘new normal’ became the nation’s norm during the unlock phase, members and leaders were oriented in the group meetings to ensure the preventive measures at their workplaces. Conventional and virtual modes of creating awareness to reach the last mile across the regions has been ensured since the institution’s coping phase.
