A family attending Virtual Insurance Event
I n this unpredictable world, what can make our lives more secure is insurance. Sadly, in a country with a high number of fatalities and health related issues, most of us are highly unaware about the insurance schemes which can not only safeguard our family but also save us from financial crises.
The need for insurance literacy becomes only greater when we move to the interiors of our country, particularly the tribal belt.
It is with the need to spread awareness on insurance schemes, that DHAN Foundation has tried to reach the last mile in the tribal population through virtual operations . From time, DHAN Foundation has tried to create awareness on government schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) and mutual insurance programme. The meetings have been virtual and individual families have been reached through call centers and virtual apps for family counselling. The DHAN professionals initially conducted ‘Trainers of Training’, which is an orientation program for professionals at federation level and its associates. It is through them that orientation takes place at village level.
In northern India, DHAN is currently working in Ratlam and Dhar district of Madhyapradesh, Ranchi and Latehar district of Jharkhand, Gaya district of Bihar. Total reach as of May 2021 is 11000 families. Out of that 3382 families have enrolled in an insurance programme. These families are members of Kalanjiam and everyone has a savings of minimum Rs.5000-20000. From this savings, they get a savings interest of Rs.100-1200. This fund has been used by them for paying savings. Hence, It will be very useful for them to pay insurance even if they lose employment in unfortunate circumstances.
