91st Lecture Series on ‘Sacred Geography of Tamiraparani Basin’ –Part 3

Main Gateway –Kasivisvanatha temple- Tenkasi

In the two previous lectures the cave temples, the monolithic temple at Kalugumalai, and some of the structural temples in the Tamiraparani basin were taken for discussion. The present lecture is on the remaining sacred monuments of the region. Though there are hundreds of such monuments only a few examples have been taken for discussion in the three lectures. Most of the other monuments, though belong to the early period, are small in structure and they all fall under one or the other categories discussed in these lectures. The present; lecture deals with the sacred monuments at Tenkasi, Srivaikundam, and other Vishnu temples fall under the category of Navatirupatis (Group of Nine Vaishnava temples located in a circle around the river Tamiraparani), Kutralanatha temple at Courtallam, etc.
