Climate Change : The silent radio station at Nagapattinam
N agapattinam is a land of disasters. From the Tsunami of the year 2004 to the Gaja Cyclone in the year 2018, the delta region has seen it all.
Inspite of the nature’s wrath and the fury of annual rains, the region stands upright due to the resilience of its inhabitants. From the busy fishermen catching the prey in the middle of sea water to the toiling farmers bent down as they collect the paddy from the farms, the rural majority of Nagapattinam truly exemplify the meaning of life and service.
In order to serve this rural world, the DHAN Foundation initiated the community radio ‘Kalanjiam Samuga Vanoli’, the radio run by the rural community of Nagapattinam. Located in the humble village of ‘Vizhundamavadi’, the radio station serves more than 23 villages and covers 13 km of radius.
Last month , the correspondents from BBC network happened to visit the Community Radio to take a first hand look at the service rendered by the radio station for the community.
