Adavi Plantation and Pongal Celebration
S acred groves are the noble evidences of native wisdom. There are sacred groves which are taken care by the local community and being preserved with utmost care. Besides villagers, the urban community is also paying attention in preserving sacred groves. In this line, intensive plantation of 8,640 Native tree herbal plants and bamboo saplings were planted at Urban Sacred Grove - Adavi, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai. Apart form greening 20 trenches and 2 percolation ponds were created for harvesting water. The process was community led and engaged more than 30 volunteers who came together for the cause. This helped in creating ownership of the sacred grove among the community members. Later, community came together to celebrate Pongal at Adavi as a formal ceremony, celebrating the harmony with the newly rejuvenating ecosystem.
