Volunteers and community after clean drive at Kaka Oothu
I nternational day for action for rivers is dedicated in saving, celebrating, and creating awareness about the importance of rivers. The Kiruthumal one of the ancient river that lost in Madurai city, which originates near Thuvariman, is the product of five natural springs from Nagamalai hills. Urbanisation and climate change has it impacts over these springs which reflected on deterioration of the river. Kaka Oothu (Crow spring) was one among the origin of the river Kiruthumal. In spite of the social beliefs the local community visiting the springs polluting the spring environment with the left outs of anthropogenic invention like plastics, poly ethylene bags, tetra sachets and liquor bottles. The DHAN volunteers with the help of local community members carried out the cleaning process by collecting the pollutants in basket and sacks. This process imbibed the importance of the springs in originating rivers to the community. Totally 3 sacks of plastics and 12 kgs of liquor bottle were collected by involving 11 volunteers.
