The Community of Vizhundamavadi Village actively engaged in creating Eco-brick structures
W alk outside your home on any given day and chances are that you will always be greeted by a range of empty bottles littering the roads.
Plastic pollution is one of the most harmful types of pollution plaguing our society and improper disposal of plastics is only aggravating it.
However, with a solution devised by a small group of enthusiastic youngsters, these waste plastic bottles have found a unique use! With proper technique these waste bottles can be converted into eco-bricks which can be used for building blocks and structures, thus reducing the bottles from being littered. As a part of the initiative, 1000 bottles were filled with plastic waste. Around 30kg plastic waster from the village was reused to create eco-bricks.
Facilitated by SBI Youth of India Fellow Ajay Jhawar and the volunteers of Kalanjiam Samuga Vanoli - Community Radio, the initiative was commenced in the village of Vizhundamavadi Village in Nagapattinam.
With the support of village youths, MGREGA workers, and the village Panchayat, the eco-bricks were created in a short time. With the local mansion, the final structure was shaped.
The structure was a symbol of how collectively a community can play a role in combating environmental pollution. Impressed by the output, the village Panchayat decided to adopt the practice and replicate the structures in other parts of the village.
