H istoric Alagar Malai Koil exists 24 km north of the Madurai City on the traditional Trade route of Uraiyur of Chola country to Madurai of Pandya Country. The Jain Cave in Alagarmalai is having Prehistoric paintings of Jain beds with 2000 years Brahmi and 1000 years old Vattezhuthu Inscriptions. The famous Alagar temple here was constructed by Early Pandya, Chola, Late Pandya, and Vanathirayar kings, expanded during Vijayanagar and Nayak period with more than 100 stone inscriptions. The Ramayana paintings of the 17th Century exist in the Vasantha Mandapam and Nayak Mandapams are done during the Nayak period is very unique.
