T he year 2021 is significant for Madurai because it represents a century since Mahatma Gandhi shifted formal attire in favor of the modest Dhoti (white loincloth), leaving the torso exposed on September 22, 1921. This has changed the struggle for freedom not only for the nation but also for the people who are suffering from hardship and poverty. This also emphasized the importance of empowering and involving underprivileged people, as well as being a part of the process of achieving freedom and development.

To commemorate the centenary, DHAN Foundation and its Kalanjiam federations at Madurai planned a range of celebrations on September 22, 2021. It planned a rally commencing at Gandhi Memorial Hall, West Masi Street, and ending at the historic landmark Gandhi Pottal, Kamarajar Salai, where Gandhi spoke to the public for the first time after changing his dress code. A booklet narrating Gandhi’s move towards attire was released during the celebrations. Members of the Kalanjiam Self Help Groups staged a similar march throughout their streets to spread the word about centennial celebrations to their fellow citizens. In addition, a virtual heritage walk was also planned to narrate the historical episode of Gandhi’s identification with the poor. Aside from it, a number of youth competitions were held.
