Rameshwaram is one of the most important Heritage sites in the country. It connects North and South India in a Spiritual-Cultural Way. Dhanuskodi of Rameshwaram is mentioned in Sangam literature Agananuru as Thonmudhukudi. Rameshwaram was under the rule of the Sangam age Pandyas, the Kalapiras, the Early Pandyas, the Cholas, the Madurai Sultans, the Vijayanagar Nayaks, the Sethupathis and finally the British. Ramayana says that the Shivalinga of Ramanathasamy temple was consecrated by Lord Rama and the present existing architecture was developed by various kings including the Sethupathis.
