Narikudi block falls under Gundar middle and lower Vayalagam region. On 7th March, Vayalagam movement day has been celebrated at Panaikudi village in Narikudi location. Two major events – Vayalagam Pongal and Shramadan – were organized to mark the celebrations. The choice of location for celebrations has a special significance. In 2017, the Panaikudi tank (water body) located in Panaikudi village has been renovated by DHAN Foundation. Tank deepening, bund strengthening, jungle clearance, re-construction of sluice were the renovation works implemented in the Panaikudi tank. As the major occupation of the Panaikudi village is agriculture and goat rearing, the renovation of Panaikudi tank has become a boon to the villages for crop cultivation. 57 farmers – 31 male farmers and 26 female farmers – have participated in the Vayalagam Pongal and Shramadan activities.
Vayalagam leaders participated in the celebrations made to recall the Kudimaramath concept, the concept which encourages the active participation of community in tank renovation works and also ensures the full functionality of tank during the post-renovation period.
Participants have celebrated the Pongal near the Panaikudi tank, and all have taken pledge to save water and water bodies. A total area of 12,000 square meters of jungle has been cleared by the farmers as a Shramadan activity.
