Women constitute almost 50% of the world’s population but India has shown disproportionate sex ratio whereby female’s population has been comparatively lower than males across different contexts. As far as their social status is concerned, they are not treated as equal to men in all the places. Empowerment of women is a continuous agenda to equip them to be economically independent, self-reliant, have positive esteem to face any difficult situation and they should be given platform to take part in the development activities and also in decision making.
Despite significant attempts from various stakeholders to empower women today, yet the women are discriminated and marginalized at every level of the society whether it is social participation, political participation, economic participation, access to education, and also reproductive health care.
In fact, women have unique position in the economy. If women gain economic strength they gain visibility and voice. Women’s direct participation in decision making capacity and income generation activities can make significant contribution towards women empowerment.
