Tsunami- Relief and Restoring Livelihoods & Habitats DHAN Foundation Initiatives - Update 3 December 30, 2004
This is the third update on the coastal disaster. Yesterday confusion prevailed on the second attack of tsunami. First it was thought to be a rumor but on hearing official announcements. people started moving to safer places with their maximum lot. This affected both the relief and survey work . At Thirukalukundram centre of DHAN Foundation, Kalanjiam leaders and staff members could manage to contact about 90 affected people in 6 affected coastal hamlets prior to the announcement. The summary of loss calculation is given below for one area.
The actual estimate may be 25 times larger for the 2 districts of Cuddalore and Nagapattinam. Given these facts funding for the repair work and purchase of new boats / nets has been found crucial. It is found appropriate here to give the appropriate cost of occupational aids to find out the gravity of loss exactly.
There are nine types of nets. The price of each of these nets are given below Kanankatham net Rs 25,000, Otha net Rs10,000. Kola net Rs 15,000. Mani net Rs 10,000. Kavalai net Rs 20,000. Edai net Rs1,00,000. Soora net Rs 40,000. Vavaa net- Rs30,000,.
From DHAN Foundation Chennai office, it was reported that affected people in rural pockets suffer also in reaching to the relief works. While providing the edibles and clothes needs are satisfactory, immunization and health recovery needs have been found sharper at this stage. Report from Tharakambadi mentioned that burial or burning of corpses have become big issues for the local environment causing a threat to health as more attention is given to taking care of the affected and living people.
As on 27/12/2004 - DAMAGES CAUSED BY THE TSUNAMI IN THIRUKALUKUNDRAM BLOCK
