Novel and Innovative Small Millets Recipe Competition was organized by DHAN Foundation on 4th December 2017 at DHAN Central Office, Madurai for the students of Catering and Hotel Management. The event was organized with twin objectives namely, i) to generate novel appealing small millet recipes; and ii) to create awareness among the students of Catering and Hotel Management on small millet recipes. In this event, five teams from three colleges-two teams from Oriental Institute of Catering Technology & Hotel Management, Madurai; two teams from Jenneys Academy of Hotel Management, Trichy; and one team from Sri Vidhya College, Virudhunagar participated. Each team prepared the recipes on their own in line with the theme of the competition and brought it to the event and 23 innovative small millet recipes were displayed by them. Among the recipes displayed in the event, foxtail made (Thinai) pan cake, three in one laddu and seven in one briyani got popular attention. Speaking at the occasion, Dr.S.Amutha, Dean (in charge) of Home Science College, Madurai expressed her wish that this type of competition should be conducted to create awareness in mainstreaming small millet foods as regular foods and appreciated the efforts taken by DHAN Foundation for bringing back our traditional foods by this effort.
The jury consisting of three prominent experts in making small millet recipes namely, Mrs. Padmavath from Amma Parampariyam, Coimbatore, Mrs.Urmila from Atchaya Foods, Madurai and Mrs.Rojaramani, MMM hotel, T.Kallupatty evaluated the small millet recipes which were brought by the students. After evaluating the recipes, the jury announced the first, second and third prize winners based on the ranking parameters such as taste, appearance and ease of preparation and presentation of the recipe in the plate. The judges also shared their experience in connection with small millet food enterprises/restaurant in which they involved in. Particularly, Mrs.Rojaramani mentioned that modern food items like pizza and burger could be tried with small millets. The prizes were awarded to the winners of the competition. Mr.V.Vediyappan, Senior Project Executive, DHAN Foundation proposed a vote of thanks for the event.
