Therkuchanthanur

Therkuchanthanur kudiiruppu oorani is situated in Therkuchanthanur village in Manamadurai panchayat union of Sivagangai district. The total population of this villagec is 250. Majority of the families are marginal farmers and landless laborers Three types of community people are living in this village. Among these Christians are the major community living here. Agriculture is the mainstay of the life.

Status of Drinking Water in the Village

Water supply from Vaigai river pipeline not meets the water requirements of the villagers. Pipeline water supply is irregular and comes once in a week. The village people draw water from the oorani well for drinking purpose. Since last one year this well is unused due to filling of dust and other materials. So the people go to near by villages by bicycle or by walk and fetch water. This is the only oorani which provides drinking water to the villagers. At present this oorani is silted up.

Way Forward and Expected Benefits

Renovation of the oorani will increase the water storage capacity and it will ensure availability of the drinking water round the year. By repairing draw well clean drinking water will be ensured thus people will be free from water borne diseases.

“As the oorani well is filled with debris the water is not fit for drinking. Panchayat water supply is inadequate. We are facing acute water shortage since last one year. Oorani renovation and repairing of oorani well will provide relief from drinking water scarcity. ”
